Iuliu Stan Scandal: Royal Cornwall NHS Trust Admits Liability for Patient Abuse

Patients treated by Iuliu Stan at Royal Cornwall Hospital have been affected by one of the most distressing recent cases of professional misconduct in NHS care. Stan worked in trauma and orthopaedics at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust between 2015 and 2020.
What the medical tribunal found
A Medical Practitioners Tribunal found in 2024 that Stan subjected patients, including children, to unnecessary intimate procedures for sexual gratification. He was removed from the UK medical register. The Trust subsequently apologised and admitted liability in relation to inappropriate procedures.
Compensation scheme and patient rights
Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust and NHS Resolution introduced a voluntary compensation scheme for eligible patients. The Trust states that applications closed on 13 March 2026, although late requests are considered case by case; ordinary legal routes may also remain available. People who received correspondence from the Trust should seek advice about eligibility and limitation periods.
Compensation may take account of psychological injury, treatment and therapy, and other proven losses. There is no reliable universal value: an individual assessment is required.
