Michael Walsh Shoulder Surgery Scandal: Spire Healthcare Patient Recall
Published: 28/10/26 By: Will Angood
Private hospital provider Spire Healthcare reviewed the work of shoulder surgeon Michael Walsh after concerns were raised by patients and colleagues about shoulder operations, including whether some procedures were necessary or appropriately performed.
What the investigation reported
Reporting in 2020 described the recall of patients who had undergone shoulder surgery at a Spire hospital in Leeds. Spire suspended Walsh in 2018, later stopped him operating for the provider and referred concerns to the General Medical Council. Reports described legal claims brought by former patients. The allegations and individual outcomes must be distinguished from any proven finding in a specific patient’s case.
What patients should look for
Relevant concerns may include repeat surgery, persistent pain, restricted shoulder movement, whether non-surgical options were properly considered, and whether risks and alternatives were explained. Independent orthopaedic evidence is necessary to establish avoidable injury.
Potential compensation
Where a claim succeeds, compensation may include additional pain and suffering, loss of function, further treatment, earnings loss and care costs. The amount depends on the individual injury and evidence; there is no standard payout for being part of a recall.
How Medical Negligence Consultants can help
If you or a family member received treatment connected with these concerns, we can help you discuss your experience confidentially and seek advice from an appropriate specialist solicitor. A review, recall or disciplinary finding does not automatically establish an individual compensation claim: the treatment, any avoidable harm and relevant time limits must be assessed. We do not guarantee compensation or claim outcomes.
