Michael Watt Neurology Scandal: Belfast Patient Recall and Inquiry Findings

The care provided by former Belfast consultant neurologist Michael Watt led to one of Northern Ireland’s largest patient recalls. More than 5,000 patients were recalled in 2018 following concerns about diagnoses and treatment.

What the inquiry found

The Independent Neurology Inquiry reported serious failings in oversight and information sharing at Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. Reviews raised concerns about the security of some diagnoses and the suitability of treatment plans. A separate expert review of records relating to deceased patients identified significant concerns about clinical decision-making and communication.

What the recall means for patients

Patients may need independent assessment of the original diagnosis, medication, investigations and whether avoidable harm occurred. A recall does not establish negligence in every patient’s care.

Potential compensation and jurisdiction

Claims may involve avoidable injury, unnecessary treatment, psychological impact and financial losses, but require case-specific evidence. These events occurred in Northern Ireland, where legal procedures and time limits differ from England and Wales. Affected people should obtain advice from a solicitor qualified for Northern Ireland. Medical Negligence Consultants can discuss enquiries confidentially but cannot promise representation in that jurisdiction.

How Medical Negligence Consultants can help

If you or a family member received treatment connected with these concerns, we can help you discuss your experience confidentially and seek advice from an appropriate specialist solicitor. A review, recall or disciplinary finding does not automatically establish an individual compensation claim: the treatment, any avoidable harm and relevant time limits must be assessed. We do not guarantee compensation or claim outcomes.
