Paul Miller Urology Scandal: East Surrey Hospital Cancer Treatment Failings
Published: 28/10/26 By: Will Angood
Serious concerns were raised about prostate and bladder cancer care provided by consultant urologist Paul Miller at East Surrey Hospital, operated by Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.
What the review found
A 2014 review reported that 27 patients had come to harm following treatment under Miller’s care, including five who subsequently died. The Trust apologised and contacted other patients. Miller disputed his dismissal at the time, saying he believed it was unjustified.
Later findings
A subsequent inquest examined deaths of patients treated in the urology service and identified serious problems with care. In 2021, the BMJ reported that Miller was struck off after a tribunal found dishonesty concerning a financial interest in referrals for high-intensity focused ultrasound treatment.
What affected patients and families can do
Potential concerns include cancer diagnosis, treatment choice, delays, informed consent and whether different care could have improved outcomes. Compensation is not automatic: a specialist must consider negligence, causation and the patient’s individual losses. Historic treatment dates may raise limitation issues, making prompt legal advice important.
How Medical Negligence Consultants can help
If you or a family member received treatment connected with these concerns, we can help you discuss your experience confidentially and seek advice from an appropriate specialist solicitor. A review, recall or disciplinary finding does not automatically establish an individual compensation claim: the treatment, any avoidable harm and relevant time limits must be assessed. We do not guarantee compensation or claim outcomes.
